The effect of selected training program on perceptual- motor skills and physical characteristics of Down syndrome individuals

Abstract

Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability in humans that cause of growth and developmental disorders and affected on fine and gross motor skills. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a selected exercise training program on perceptual- motor skills and physical characteristics of Down syndrome individual.

Method: In this semi experimental research that was performed in Nemoneh Disability Rehabilitation Centre of Tehran, 24 men with Down syndrome (mean age 26.185± 3.933) were randomly assigned to either a control (n=11) or an experimental group (n=13). All persons in experimental group followed 12 weeks selected exercise training, three times a week. Perceptual- motor skills and physical characteristics of all subjects assessed in 16 variables before and after the training program and after coding the data in SPSS software, all data were analyzed by SPSS software in descriptive and inferential statistic.

Results: Result of this research showed that 12 weeks selected exercise training hadn’t any significance effect on weight, body mass index, basal metabolism rate, muscular power in vertical jump and lateralization (P>0.05) but had a significant effect on lean body mass, body fat percentage, muscular strength in trunk and wrist, muscular endurance in push up and long and sit tests, muscular power in long jump test, overall score of balance, static and dynamic balance, speed of running and reaction time (P<0.05). Also all compression between pre and post test in control group were not significant (P>0.05).

Conclusions: The results of this study showed that this type of exercise training significantly improves physical characteristic by increase in muscle mass and decrease in body fat percent and improves perceptual-motor skill such as muscle performance, balance, agility, speed and reaction time. Improvement in physical characteristic and motor ability is cause of increase in physical activity and social interaction and this condition enhancement physical and mental health and increase quality of life in Down syndrome individuals.

The effect of inclusive education system in elementary schools on motor, social and emotional development of students with intellectual disability

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the motor, social and emotional development of elementary students with intellectual disability in ordinary schools and exceptional schools. In this research, the sample consisted of 80 children with intellectual disability with an average age of 10.752 ± 1.607 years old and between the ages of 8-14 years old. These students were educated in ordinary or exceptional schools. In order to measure the motor development, we used Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, to measure the social development we used Vineland social maturity scale and for measure emotional maturity, we used Emotional maturity Scale (EMS) Singh and Bhargava, 1991. The results of this study showed that motor, social and emotional development in mentally disabled students of ordinary elementary schools was significantly better than those of students in extraordinary schools (P <0.05). Further analysis of these results showed that gross motor development was much more affected than the fine motor development. In this variable some sub test that get more influence from this educational environment was bilateral coordination, balance, upper limb coordination, strength, speed, and Agility and agility of the upper extremity respectively. In social development, the subscales of General self-help ability, Socialization skills, Self-help eating, Communication skills and Locomotion skills were the most influential, respectively. In emotional development, the disintegration of personality, lack of independence, social incompatibility, emotional return and emotional instability of the greatest change had. These results showed well that if students with intellectual disability are educated in ordinary schools, they will experience better aspects of development and benefit from these environment.

Effect of selected exercise training program on cardiovascular function in adults with Down syndrome

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Effect of selected exercise training program on cardiovascular function in adults with Down syndrome. The statistical population of this research was Down syndrome adults of Nemoneh rehabilitation center. After study of their medical and psychological records, 19 Down syndrome (IQ between 35-69) with a mean age of 25.684 ± 4.014 years were randomly divided to two experimental (n = 10) and controls (n = 9) groups. The Experimental groups followed a 12-week selected exercise training program (a combination of strength, endurance, balance and aerobic training). Before and after the training period all subjects were evaluated by Impedance cardiograph method (Cardio screen) And Comparing of pre and post test in per group (16 variables) was performed by dependent t test. The results of this study showed that sample group in 8 from 16 variables have had abnormal values. But Following the training, the DS adults in the intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement in cardiovascular health with emphasis on five variables, thoracic fluid content, cardiac output, mean arterial blood pressure, systemic vascular resistance and systemic vascular resistance index (P<0.05). Given that any variable in the control group after three months did not change significantly (P>0.05) it can be concluded that the combined exercise training program can significantly improves cardiac function in patients with Down syndrome.

The effect of “Training-educational Kashi Package” on improvement of information processing and Reduce Mental and neurological complications of Down syndrome

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Training-educational Kashi Package on improvement of information processing and Reduce Mental and neurological complications of Down syndrome. 27 men with Down syndrome with the mean age of 26.135 ± 3.936 were randomized to control (n=13) and intervention (n=13) groups. All persons in experimental group followed 12 weeks training-educational Kashi Package, three times a week. This training was performed with the help of tree coach and five assistant in Tehran Disability Rehabilitation Centre and sponsored by the Khodabandeh Islamic Azad University. Prior to the start of the study, and after three-month training, each member in both groups was assessed according to the DSQIID questionnaire filled by caregivers of these peoples. This questionnaire assessed several sections such as memory loss, confusion, loss of skills, social isolation, behavioral changes, psychiatric symptoms, physical changes, sleep disorders and speech abnormalities. The results indicated that this Training-educational Package could cause a significant reduction in the total score of questionnaires in experimental group (P = 0.004). Analysis of questionnaire subscales showed this training let to significant decrease in memory disorders and confusion (P = 0.028) and individual skills, social withdrawal, physical symptoms and speech abnormalities (P=0.047) in experimental group. In addition, reaction time was also significantly reduced (P = 0.000). These result showed that this training-educational Package could cause a significant reduction in initial mental and neurological complications and improvement in information processing at nervous system in Down syndrome people.

The effect of selected exercise training on reduce symptom of hypotonia and changing body composition in men with Down syndrome

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of selective exercise training on reducing the symptom of hypotonia and changing body composition in Down syndrome adults. The research was performed in Nemoneh Disability Rehabilitation Centre of Tehran. 24 men with Down syndrome (mean age 26.185± 3.933) were randomly assigned to either a control (n=11) or an experimental group (n=13). The Experimental groups followed selective exercise training for 12-weeks, three times a week. Muscle performance and Physical characteristic of all subjects assessed by Bioelectrical Impedance, wrest and trunk dynamometer and strength subscale of Bruininks Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Before and after the training. All data were analyzed by SPSS software in descriptive and inferential statistic. Result of this research showed that after 12 weeks selective exercise training, body fat percent had a significant reduction (P<0.05) and soft lean mass and muscle performance (in 6 tests for assess muscle strength, endurance and power) had a significant increase (P<0.05). The results of this study showed that this type of exercise training significantly improves the health of Down syndrome adults by reduce in extra body fat percent and increase in muscles tissue and performance and in this way, it will reduce the symptoms of Down syndrome for benefit of improved physical health.
